Welcome To Weekend Crafting Adventures: An Introduction To Crafty Fun

Welcome to Weekend Crafting Adventures. I’m Kim. I’m your host. I am super excited to share with you a little bit about me and a lot about what this show is all about. I am a full-time teacher and a free-time crafter. I live in a small town in Colorado with my husband and two teenage boys. I absolutely love my job. I work with preschool students. It is the best job I’ve ever had. I have been doing it for a really long time. When I’m not working and not spending time with my family and my friends or playing in the mountains of Colorado, you will find me in my craft corner, crafting, sewing, and creating.

In this show, I am going to be sharing with you all of the experiences and projects that I do, learning how to use my Cricut Maker machine. Before I talk a little bit more about that, I want to tell you about how I got here. A couple of years ago, I was looking for a hobby to jump into. When I was in college, my grandmother gave me a Pfaff sewing machine.

I have used it a couple of times in the past, but it had just been collecting dust in our storage room. I pulled out my sewing machine and signed up for a couple of classes at a local fabric shop to learn how to sew. After those two classes, I didn’t get out of that experience quite what I was hoping to. I was hoping to find a little bit of a sewing community to belong to that was separate from my work and friends.

What ended up happening is I didn’t have a great experience. I was not as skilled as the other sewers at the time. I made mistakes and was sewing slow. I didn’t know that much about my machine. I was nervous to ask questions. After those two classes, I packed up my sewing machine, headed home, and looked on the internet?

The internet became my sewing teacher and my sewing community, whether it was looking on Pinterest, YouTube, or all of the other things that you can find when you are searching, learning how to sew, putting in a zipper, or anything like that. I jumped in and taught myself, using the resources on the internet, how to sell. Once I got rolling, I did not look back. I created a little one-person business for myself, where I sewed enough products and fun things. I did some summer craft fairs in my town and at least one craft fair during the holidays.

It was fun. I loved it. That brings me to the Cricut Maker. For my birthday a couple of years back, my mom gave me the Cricut Maker to help cut the fabric that I would use to make different projects while I was sewing, thinking that it would help save me time and be a great little machine to help with my sewing. I was super excited when I opened the gift.

If there is a way to bring joy and a little bit of normalcy to these kids during this unsettled crazy time, we should support it. Creating team T-shirts is one way to do it. Share on X

I was looking forward to using it. I brought it upstairs. I put it on my shelf and didn’t open it. I would be sewing, and I would look at it. I would know it was there but I wasn’t sure that I was ready to open that box and learn about how to incorporate the Cricut into my sewing. It stayed on the shelf. Fast forward to the middle of the pandemic, everything shut down.

I’m not going to spend a lot of time talking about that because we all experienced it but we had two teachers teaching full-time remote in the house and two students attending full-time school remotely. It was a bit of a crazy time. One of the things that happened during that time was that my boys and the children in the neighborhood would go outside every day and play Wiffle ball.

Early on, my husband and I decided that, “Let’s let them do this. Get outside. They need to have fresh air. They need to be moving around. They need to have some sort of social interaction during the craziness of that shutdown time.” One day, my son, Michael, came inside and said, “Mom, we are doing a Wiffle ball league. Can you make us some team T-shirts?” I thought about it.

I thought, “I have a machine that I could do that with.” I looked at Michael and said, “Yes, I will make team T-shirts.” Within a week, I had gathered all the materials and began jumping into making these Wiffle ball team T-shirts for my boys and also the kids in the neighborhood. I felt like if there was a way to bring joy and a little bit of normalcy to these kiddos during that unsettled crazy time, I was going to support it. I created team T-shirts with the help of my boys and the kids in the neighborhood, deciding who their mascots were, what their names were, and what they wanted on the shirts. By no means were these shirts perfect. I was layering vinyl and didn’t know what I was doing.

I was basically hopping on to anything on the internet that could give me a little bit of information on how to use this machine to make the T-shirts. They came out fine, and the boys loved them. The kids in the neighborhood all wore them. That was great. Once I opened that Cricut Maker, one of the things that I learned about myself was that there were tons of beginner guides, so much information, and many great resources on how to use this machine but it was very overwhelming to me.

I wasn’t sure exactly how I wanted to use the machine next but what I kept finding was any time I would start diving into one of those huge beginner guides with chapter after chapter, page after page, which is amazing resources, I shut down and got overwhelmed. What I started doing was when there was something I wanted to make or create that the Cricut Maker was going to help me with. I researched that project and the things that I needed to do to create and complete and make that specific project. That worked for me.

Weekend Crafting Adventures
This fun podcast is a cool way to share experiences and create a little crafty Cricut community of learning how to use the machine one project at a time.

That brings me to how I ended up here. I have a brother and a sister-in-law that have a podcast company, and I have a Cricut Maker machine that I am having so much fun learning how to use. Why not bring those two things together and share my experiences and crafting projects with others that are interested in learning how to use a Cricut Maker and doing some different kinds of crafting in their free time?

That is where the idea came from. As I have started working on different projects, I have been having so much fun. What I am learning as I’m using it so far in the few projects that I’ve done is that the one thing that is so cool about this machine is the way that you can personalize things for individual people. It has changed my hobby of crafting. I have been able to learn a little bit about how to cut some fabric on the Cricut Maker, which you will learn about in a couple of the episodes.

That is an adventure in itself. Anyway, I am looking forward to this. I am going to share with you the projects that I’m doing. I’m going to share with you the products that I’m using. I am going to let you know where the ideas came from and the inspiration behind the projects. I’m going to share with you any websites or places where I have gotten ideas from, resources, tips, and tricks, and learn how to use this machine one project at a time. I am looking forward to building a crafty Cricut community as I learn how to use this Cricut Maker one project at a time on Weekend Crafting Adventures.
